ITAK leader Shritharan extends support to Tamil Common Candidate

Leader of Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) MP S. Shiritharan extended his support to Tamil Common Candidate P. Ariyanenthiran despite his party is yet to make a final decision on which Presidential candidate it is going to support in the upcoming elections. 


ITAK Parliamentarian met with Tamil Common candidate P. Ariyanenthiran, who is also a Central Committee member of ITAK on Thursday at his residence in Jaffna and extended his support for his candidacy. 


MP Shritharan also stressed that it is his personal decision to extend support to the Tamil Common candidate considering the fate of the party and the well-being of the people who elected him to Parliament. 


Meanwhile, the Central Committee of ITAK which met recently called for an explanation from Mr Ariyanenthiran over his decision to agree to become the candidate without approval of the party.


The initiative to form the Tamil Peoples General Council to field a common candidate at the upcoming polls came following an understanding reached between seven political parties and seven civil society outfits which signed an MoU on July 22. 


The MoU was signed by Selvam Adaikalanathan of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO), C.V. Wigneswaran of the Tamil Makkal Kootani, D. Siddarthan of the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), N. Srikantha of the Tamil Nationalist Party, Suresh Premachandran of the Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF), P. Iyngaranesan of the Tamil Nationalist Pasumai Movement, and S. Venthan of the Democratic Cadres Party.


Civil society activists included T. Vasantharajah, S.C. Jothilingam, Prof. K.T. Kanesalingam, and R. Wigneswaran, and political analysts A. Jatheendra and M. Nilanthan. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 24/2024)
