Tamil Common Candidate Ariyanethiran handed in nomination papers

Former Parliamentarian P. Ariyanethiran who was announced as Tamil Common Candidate by Tamil political parties and civil society outfits in North and Eastern provinces handed in his nomination papers today to contest the upcoming Presidential elections on September 21. 


He was accompanied by C.V. Wigneswaran of the Tamil Makkal Kootani to the Election Commission office in Rajagiriya, Colombo today. 


Mr Ariyanethiran, a Central Committee member of Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) was announced as a Common candidate by political parties and civil society outfits saying the move was intended to register their disappointment with the failure of successive governments to resolve the longstanding ethnic issues in the country.


At least 35 candidates including leading candidates- independent candidate President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and leader of National Peoples'Power (NPP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake handed over their nomination papers today. 


The Election Commission is in the process of accepting nominations for the upcoming Presidential polls and any objections to nominations can be raised between 9 am and 11.30 am.(Northeastern Monitor/ August 15/2024)
