At least fourteen Indian fishermen were taken into custody for engaging in fishing Northern waters off the Delft Island, yesterday, Navy said. Three of their bottom trawlers were also seized.

The seized trawlers together with Indian fishermen (14) were brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour and they will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings, Navy said.

With this recent apprehension, the Navy has seized a total of 50 Indian trawlers and 359 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters in 2024, and subsequently handed them over to authorities for legal proceedings. (Northeastern Monitor/September 8/2024)
