The NPP government led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake is to launch fresh probe into seven high profile killings in the past including the kidnapping and murder of Tamil journalist D. Sivaram after nearly sixteen years.
The slain columnist and founder editor editor of Tamil Net was murdered in 2008 inside the High Security Zone (HSZ) near Parliament by unknown persons after he was kidnapped near a restaurant in Batticaloa.
Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath told reporters last week that fresh probes will be launched into seven incidents where investigations were halted due to political pressure.
Police investigations over the death led to the arrest of suspects attached to a one-time militant group that worked closely with Sri Lankan military forces during wartime. With all suspects being released on bail, the investigations were put on hold by successive governments in the past.
The other cases include the Central Bank Bond scam, Easter Sunday terror attacks, the disappearance of Lalith Kumar and Kugan Muruganandan, the disappearance of Vice ChancellorSivasubramaniam Raveendranath, murder of Dinesh Schaffter, and shooting incident outside the W15 hotel in Weligama.
