With the annual Maveerar - Heroes commemoration week commencing this week, Tamils across North and Eastern provinces are engaged in remembering their war dead peacefully.
War-affected people, locals and youth groups are engaged in clearing partially damaged cemeteries where fallen cadres were buried in order to mark the final day collective event of the week tomorrow (November 27) evening.
A temporary commemoration hall was also put up near the memorial of Thiyagi Thileepan in Nallur in Jaffna where the details of thousands of fallen cadres of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are showcased.
Relatives and families of fallen cadres also visit the place to remember their loved ones who died during the three decades-long war.
Unlike in the past, the National Peoples' Power-led government announced this week that Tamil people can remember their war dead peacefully but not the terrorists.
The government also made it clear that commemorating terrorist organizations along with symbols directly or indirectly is against the law as well. LTTE remains a proscribed terrorist organisation in the country.
Designated by LTTE, the Maveerar Naal- Martyrs Day was introduced by the organization to commemorate their fallen cadres in their dedicated cemeteries that were set up during the war time. (Northeastern Monitor/ Nov 26/2024)
