Kilinochchi-based independent journalist M. Thamilselvan was attacked by unknown persons who came in a van last evening (26) on A 9 road, Kilinichchi.
Thamilselvan told Northeastern Monitor that he was returning home last evening from his office when he came under attack by an unknown group that came in a van. The injured journalist is currently admitted to Kilinochchi District Hospital.
"The two individuals in the car tried to grab me inside but I managed to escape. They assaulted me on my chest, back and neck. I could not move for some time," the injured journalist said.
In post-war Kilinochchi, Thamilselvan has been consistently reported on humanitarian issues and most revealed environment-related crimes and drug abuse incidents in the district through investigative articles.
Condemning the incident, the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association wrote to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) urging an immediate investigation and arrest of the culprits.
"We strongly condemn such acts of violence and abduction, which have no place in a democratic, free country. Over the past two decades, we have witnessed numerous killings, abductions and attacks on journalists and media institutions, yet justice remains elusive for these incidents," the journalists collective said in a statement.
