A newly erected Buddha statue in front of Nursing College in Batticaloa caused concerns among locals and civil society groups who alleged that the statue was erected illegally.

The groups alleged that the statue was erected without any prior permission from any relevant local authorities.

Former Batticaloa MP K. Karunakaram alleged that the move is part of ongoing state sponsored initiative of changing local demographics of the majority Tamil speaking area.

“ We came to know that the new Principal of Nursing College who's from the majority community authorised for this with ulterior motives,” the former MP stressed. (Northeastern Monitor/December 13/2024)
