Tamil political parties secured the majority number of seats in yesterday’s local government polls in the North and Eastern provinces, leaving the ruling government, National Peoples’ Power (NPP), with fewer seats.
Both Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) and All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) contesting under the banner of Thamil Makkal Peravai secured a considerable number of seats in most of the districts throughout the two provinces.
For the Jaffna Municipal Council, ITAK secured 13 seats while ACTC and NPP secured 12 and 10 seats respectively. Both the Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) and the Eelam Peoples’ Democratic Party (EPDP) secured four seats, while the United National Party (UNP) and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) won one seat in the council.
ACTC secured the highest number of seats in the Valvettithurai Urban Council, Pointpedro Urban Council, and Chavakachcheri Urban Council in the Jaffna district alone. In Chavakachcheri UC, both ACTC and ITAK secured six seats.
In Kilinochchi, ITAK secured the majority of seats in local bodies with a comfortable majority to form local governments as well. In Mannar and Vavuniya, DTNA secured a significant number of seats, while in Trincomalee, Ambara and Batticalao, ITAK is expected to form the government with the support of fellow Tamil political parties.
