Relatives of Chencholai massacre victims commemorated their loved ones today in Vallipunam, Kilinochchi, where 61 individuals including 54 school girls aged between 16 to 18 were killed due to Sri Lanka Air Force bombing on this day, 19 years ago.
Along with emotionally charged relatives of victims, locals, and civil society outfits took part in the collective commemorative ceremony today. The victims’ families reiterated the call for justice and urged the international community to hold the Sri Lankan government accountable for past alleged human rights violations, including the Chencholai massacre.
On August 14, 2006, a Sri Lankan Air Force aircraft bombed the Chencholai complex, targeting school girls who were engaged in leadership and first aid training amidst the ongoing war situation.
Both UNICEF and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission confirmed that the complex was not a LTTE training camp as claimed by the Sri Lankan government. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 14/ 2025)
