Ready to testify before international probe: says death sentenced convict of Chemmani mass grave killings

Somaratna Rajapaksa was handed in death sentence over the murder cases of school girl Krishanthi, her mother and relatives in Chemmani, 1996.

One of the main perpetrators of the Krishanthi murder and his relatives in Chemmani - Somaratna Rajapaksa  said that he is willing to testify before any international probe on the ongoing fresh excavation of human remains.

Writing a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake through his wife, the death sentenced convict claimed that he can reveal hidden hands of then senior officials who oversaw death chambers and expressed his willingness to testify before any international probe to reveal the truth.

On behalf of death sentenced military soldier Lance Corporal Somaratna Rajapaksa, his wife S.C. Wijewikrema wrote the letter to President Dissanayake explaining circumstances that led to his arrest and later conviction and the role of then senior officials in such heinous crimes in the wake of fresh mass grave sites identified in the Chemmani region after 29 years, according to the letter that was published in the weekend Tamil newspaper Virakesari on its Sunday 3 edition.

In the letter, the death sentenced convict claimed that previous governments protected the top ranking officials who were involved in the crimes committed in Chemmani while lower ranking military personnel were fixed and later handed in death sentences. He urged the government to appoint a new independent Court of Inquiry to reveal the truth behind the crimes committed in Chemmani as well.
