Prof Kumaravadivel appointed as Chancellor of University of Jaffna

Emeritus Professor R. Kumaravadivel has been appointed as the Chancellor of Univeristy of Jaffna by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with effect from August 27, President's office said. 

The appointment has been made by President under Section 32 of the University Act No 16 of 1978 as amended in his capacity as President. The appointment of Prof Kumaravadivel to the office of Chancellor to the univeristy is for period of five years. 

As a trained physicist, Prof R. Kumaravadivel read his PhD at University of Bristol in October 1975 following his BSc Special degree in Physics (First Class Honours) t University of Ceylon, Peradeniya (1966-1970). He joined the University of Jaffna in 1976 and prior to that worked in the Universities of Peradeniya from 1968 as well.

He served as Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Jaffna,  from 5 June 2006 till 20 December 2007. He also served as Member of University Grants Commission, May 2015 – January 2020. (Northeastern Monitor/ September 6/2025)
