Local body refuse to allow Navy to setup radar in Keerimalai

Proceedings of Valikaamam North Pradeshiya Sabha meeting on October 16.

Valikaamam North Pradeshiya Sabha passed a resolution against Navy’s request to allocate two acres of private land in order to set up a radar in Keerimalai, Jaffna yesterday (October 16).

When the monthly meeting  of the Sabha was held yesterday under the chairmanship of Chairman S. Sugirthan, members of National Peoples’ Power said that the radar is to be set up to prevent drug smuggling in the area and assured land owners will be given compensation as well.

Chairman and majority of the members belong to Ilankai Thamil Arasau Katchchi (ITAK)  rejected the claims of NPP members saying there is no link between setting up radar and drug smuggling.

The ITAK members also reiterated that people’s land belong to people and military forces should vacate from civilian lands in order to allow them to resettle on their own lands.

The Council also collectively decided to write to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with regard to returning over 2500 acres of private land in the region to rightful owners as military continue to occupy the lands even after 16 years passed since end of civil war in 2009. (Northeastern Monitor/ October 17/2025)
