Buddha statue installed with police protection in Trinco

The Buddha statue was being brought by police personnel to the spot where an illegal building was to be constructed by Buddhist monks.

The statue of Lord Buddha which was removed by police last night was brought back and installed by the police today following severe criticism leveled against government of failing to protect ‘Buddha Sasana”.

Trincomalee police personnel brought the statue in their vehicle to the spot where Buddhist monks gathered to perform religious ceremonies.

A tense situation erupted when NPP MP Roshan Akmeemana visited the spot to witness the event. He was booed by locals demanding him to leave the premises. He left the spot after speaking with some monks.

Earlier, police personnel prevented a ceremony being held to place foundation stone for an illegal building and a statue of Buddha was at Dutch Bay Area of Trincomalee.

Meanwhile Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) said it is is utterly dismayed by the conduct of the government and public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala for tamely giving into the undue pressures of the majoritarian forces.

“Last night when the Police removed the illegally installed statue on the Trincomalee beach on the orders of the Minister, some people actually thought that the government was acting properly without any racist mindset. Alas! That was short-lived as the Minister demonstrated in Parliament that this government’s feet are also made of clay. All their rhetoric of treating all the peoples equally, fell flat on its face when the Minister unashamedly announced in Parliament that the statue was removed due to security concerns(!!!) and that it will be reinstalled today.” the statement released by party secretary M. A. Sumanthiran said.

The major Tamil party noted that ‘NPP government stands exposed as a racist, Sinhala Buddhist nationalist force, no different to any other government in the past. All Tamil members of the NPP including Trincomalee MP and deputy minister Arjun Hemachandra must resign forthwith,’
