One of the suspects accused in the rape and murder case of Sivaloganathan Vidya in Punuguduthivu, Jaffna in 2015, had plans to sell the video of the incident to a foreign underworld gang, the Supreme court was told this week, the Sunday Times reported.
Additional Solicitor General Azad Nawawi told the five-judge Supreme Court bench that the suspect, ninth in the case and known as Swiss Kumara, had plans to sell the video with images to the gang.
ASG Nawawi, was responding to a statement made by defense counsel Dharshana Kuruppu who said that though there were claims that the suspect had video recorded the incident there was no evidence to prove it.
ASG Nawawi said that it has been proved beyond doubt about the video recording.
It was also revealed that subsequent to the arrest, the accused had tried to absolve himself from the crime by trying to offer Rs. 20 million to the chief investigating officer in an attempt to make him a witness, for the state.
This was revealed when the Supreme Court took up appeals filed by seven suspects against the death sentence passed by High Courts. The suspects have sought an acquittal.
The bench comprised Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Justices Achala Wengappuli, Priyantha Fernando, Menaka Wijesundara and Sampath Abeykoon.
Defence counsel Kuruppu argued that the evidence have been contradictory.
However ASG Nawawi said the allegations had been proved beyond doubt and pleaded that appeal be dismissed.
The judgment will be delivered in due course. (Courtesy- The Sunday Times)
