Tamil applicants for state jobs allege Govt institutions send Sinhala only interview letters

Letter sent by Irrigation Department to a Tamil youth who applied for a job vacancy.

Several Tamil youths who applied for vacancies in various government institutions alleged that the official correspondence they received from those respective organizations are in Sinhala language.

A Tamil graduate who applied for a vacancy at Irrigation Department told Northeastern Monitor that he had received a response in Sinhala language this week calling for an interview. He said he is unable to comprehend what’s written on the letter and also not sure how to prepare for the interview.

He is also not sure whether the interview will be held in Sinhala or Tamil. He also stressed that the timeframe for the interview is also within a shorter span of time period.

Even though Sinhala and Tamil are considered as official languages in the country, several government institutions are unable to implement bilingual lanauge policy when it comes to corresponding individuals in their mother tongue.

Sources told Northeastern Monitor that several other departments such as Sri Lanka Transport Board, Department of Archeology, and Department of Wildlife etc sent directives to locals and even other state institutions in North and East through Sinhala circulars.
