Indian poaching: Northern fishermen seeks meeting with AKD

 

Representatives of Northern Fishermen Federation handed over a petition to Northern Governor N. Vedhanyahan on the impact of Indian bottom trawling on their livelihood and local economy. 


Federation of Northern Fishermen Unions sought a meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to raise the ongoing illegal bottom trawling by Indian fishermen in Northern waters. 


The federation representatives led by it’s Secretary N. M. Aalam and other district representatives met with Northern Governor N. Vedhanayahan today at the Secretariat in Jaffna raising the issue stressing their livelihood is under threat due to frequent trawling by Indian fishermen. 


While expressing to gratitude to India’s immediate humanitarian assistance for flood affected regions in Sri Lanka, the fishermen demanded that Indian Central government has to intervene in this matter. 


The fishermen, through Governor’s Office sought a meeting with President Dissanayake as assured by President earlier to meet Northern fishermen on difficulties faced by them. 


Last week, Northern fishermen in islands particularly Delft alleged Indian trawlers damaged millions worth of fishing nets and equipments in sea and they had to return home empty handed. (Northeastern Monitor / December 9/2025)
