Northern Governor N. Vethanayahan sacked two key elected officials in locals bodies through publication of a gazette notification based on an inquiry that was initiated by his office.
The gazette issued under Urban Councils Ordinqnce No 61 of 1939 along with Section 2 of Provincials Councils Act No 12 of 1989, Governor removed G. Kishore as vice Chairman of Chavakachcheri Urban Council and S. Kandeepan from the post Mayor of Vavuniya Municipal Council.
The gazette notification also stressed that the decision to remove the elected officials from office was taken after a report submitted by Individual Inquiry Board, headed by reitieed District Judge K. Ariyanayaham.
The decision to call for inquiry against two elected officials was taken after they openly criticized the directives issued by the Governor’s office in recent past. (Northeastern Monitor/ June 26/2026)
