A Tamil rapper and singer who was detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for performing Eelam related songs was granted bail after Attorney General decided to file fresh charges under Penal Code.

Chavakachcheri Magistrate Court granted bail for singer Ganesakumar Sangeethsan (24) yesterday (June 12) after nearly two weeks of detention in prison. The last minute decision to charge him under Section 120 of Penal Code regulations was taken after several protests were staged across North and East demanding to stop use PTA and ensure cultural expression of Tamil speaking people.

On Friday, the case was called on three times at Chavakachcheri Magistrate Courton Friday where a written undertaking of Attorney General was handed over an attorney at law representing singer. Earlier, lawyer K. Sayanthan appeared for him in the court.

After being released on bail, Sangeethsan thanked President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and National People’s Power (NPP) Jaffna district parliamentarian K. Ilankumaran as well.  (Northeastern Monitor/June 13/2026)
