At least 120 prisoners have been transferred to both Jaffna and Batticaloa prisons yesterday following the riot situation that broke inside Negombo prisoners earlier this week.
Accordingly, 60 prisoners have been transported to Jaffna prisons by yesterday (July 7) while another batch of 60 were taken into Batticaloa prisons in the aftermath of riots that took the lives 26 including six Prison officials.
The violence that broke inside Negombo prisons on last Sunday turned out to be deadly riots with prison authorities struggling to ensure normalcy within the prisons. The situation was brought under control on Monday morning amidst some inmates started to attack prison officials with weapons.
The government told Parliament that gangs with ties to underworld groups were behinds the attacks and Cabinet appointed a three member committee to investigate the violent incident that shook the nation this week. (Northeastern Monitor/ July 9/2026)
