Chemmani mass grave: over 550 human skeletons recovered so far

 

Ongoing excavation activities at Chemmani mass grave site. During 107th day, at least eight more human remains were found. (August 16)

At least 557 human skeletons have been recovered during the ongoing excavation activities at Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna. 


The excavation process is being carried out in stages due to financial constraints and monsoon weather period in the recent past. The excavation activities were carried out for 107th day today as part of third stage (August 15). 


Another eight more human skeletons were identified today while human remains of ten persons were excavated fully today. 


In addition to existing mass grave sites, three more sites were identified and excavation process commenced today. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 16/2026)
