Villagers of Paravipaanchan in Kilinochchi staged a protest on Friday (8) demanding authorities to renovate the main access bridge to their village.
Located in some 250 meters from A9 road, the bridge is in a bad condition for transportation purposes due to no renovation in last 46 years, villagers who stepped into waters as part of their protest.
Students and locals from neighboring Pannankandy and Maruthanagar villages also use the bridge on a daily basis. The bridge was constructed by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1985 following the wartime destruction in 1980.
Locals alleged tippers and lorries carrying sand and heavy materials used the bridge in recent past that led to deteriorating condition of the bridge. They also alleged that despite serval requests and petitions submitted to authorities, no steps were taken to renovate the bridge. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 9/2026)
