| Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai villagers in Batticaloa have been on a continous protest demanding return of their lands for livestock over three years. |
The people of Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai have been continuously engaged in a democratic struggle for the past three years to protect their livestock and grazing lands and to regain the grazing lands that rightfully belong to them.
The protest, which commenced on 15.09.2023, has today (September 15,2026) completed three years, and the people continue to carry forward their struggle for their rights.
The people of Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai have been conducting this democratic protest to condemn the long-standing failure to provide the grazing lands reportedly allocated by the Government for the protection of their livestock, as well as attempts to occupy or appropriate these lands, while asserting their legitimate rights.
In support of their longstanding and just democratic struggle, we, on behalf of the Voice of the Land-Lost People, confirmed our participation in the three-year anniversary protest held today.
In order to further strengthen the voice of the people of Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai, who continue to struggle for land rights, livelihood rights, and the right to protect their livestock, we stood shoulder to shoulder with them and expressed our support as a civil society representation.
Our journey of strengthening the voice of the people will continue until this democratic struggle for their legitimate rights reaches an appropriate and just solution.
