Police tells Jaffna Mayor to remove Thileepan memorial

Statue of Thiyagi Thileepan was removed by Jaffna police folllowing annual commemorative events held on September 27.

A senior police official in Northern province wrote to Mayor of Jaffna this week instructing to remove the memorial at Nallur in the memory of Thiyagi Thileepan.

Senior DIG (North) P. H. Marpana wrote to Mayor of Jaffna Mrs Mathivathani V. Mathivathani instructing her to remove the memorial at Nallur on the basis that the site has been an ‘obstacle’ for reconciliation activities in the regions.

The move came after police arbitrarily removed the statue of Thiyagi Thileepan on September 27 following annual commemoration events saying the statue was installed without any permits.

Arguing that remembering an individual who was part of a banned terrrorist organization is against the law, the senior official said the remaining objects at the venue should be removed since it comes under the purview of the council.

The council is yet to act on the directive issued by senior police official. (Northeastern Monitor /October 1/2026)
