Tamil people across North and Eastern provinces today marked the 41st anniversary of the Black July riots- which commenced on July 23, 1983, and went on over a week till - July 30 resulting in the massacre of at least 3000 Tamils. Over 150,000 were forced to be displaced by state-aided Sinhalese mobs in the South.
Local civil society outfits, political parties and youth groups organized pocket commemoration events in the two provinces to remember those who were killed in the South due to the riots that spread to other areas where Tamil-speaking people resided during the Presidency of late former President J.R. Jayawardene.
According to several state-appointed inquiries that were appointed in the aftermath of the riots, at least 3,000 Tamils were killed, and properties and some 5,000 business entities owned by Tamil people were looted by Sinhalese mobs. At least 150,000 Tamils who were living in the South including those of Malayaham origin were forced to be displaced to the North and Eastern provinces of the country, which is considered the Homeland of Tamil-speaking people.
