An Indian fisherman was killed and another went missing after their bottom trawler collided with Navy vessel in Delft, Jaffna early this morning, according to Navy sources.
The Navy vessel was engaged in patrolling on the International Maritime Boarder Line (IMBL) when the Indian trawler was engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters.
Two other fishermen were rescued and admitted to Punkuduthivu Hospital for treatment while search operations are underway to track the other missing fisherman.
Last month (June), an Indian fisherman was killed under similar circumstances while engaged in illegal bottom trawling fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 1, 2024)
