Sri Lanka Podhujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Namal Rajapaksa reiterated that his party is of the view that the country is a unitary state and police and land powers should not be devolved into provinces while ruling out any potential merger of North and Eastern provinces in future.
Addressing an election rally in Anuradhapura last Friday (23), Mr Rajapaksa said that the SLPP is a party committed to policies that can be implementable and not mere election promises to mislead people.
" The parents and children of these villages fought to protect the unitary state of the country. Anuradhapura was a boarder village in those days. We won't allow the creation of boarder villages. We reiterate that police and land powers will not be given to Provincial Councils," Mr Rajapaksa said.
He also stressed that he does not want to give false promises to Tamil-speaking people as well on the matter of devolution of powers. "No need to trick them. We will say yes to what can be implemented and what not. We will safeguard the Tamil culture and protect the language as well," (Northeastern Monitor/ August 25/2024)
