The Tamil National Peoples' Alliance led by Jaffna district MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam reiterated his party's stand of boycotting the upcoming Presidential polls and claimed that the move to field a 'Tamil Common Candidate' by certain elements in the elections is to further weaken Tamil Nationalistic cause.

Speaking to reporters in Colombo today, MP Ponnambalam charged the elements behind the Common candidacy platform have secret channels with President Ranil Wickremesinghe and indicated to work under a unitary structure of the state along with 13th Amendment while undermining Tamil peoples' decades long quest to be recognized as "Tamil Nation".

"They talk about Tamil Nationalism but they are not genuine to the cause. The main motive is to secure the votes under this platform to show that they are within the unitary and nationalist structure of the Sri Lankan state," MP Ponnambalam said.

He also stressed that boycotting the polls is the only option left for the Tamil people to express their stand on Tamil cause where ethnic conflict should be resolved under a federal structure while being recognized as a Nation within the Sri Lankan state.

"We urge Tamil people not to be carried away by the false unity calls by elements who are involved in weakening the Tamil cause. There is a sinister attempt to destabilize the Tamil cause within the unitary state," he said. (Northeastern Monitor/ September 16/2024)
