The ruling National Peoples’ Power (NPP) emerged as the leading political party in North and Eastern provinces pushing Ilankai traditional Tamil nationalistic parties to second rank.
With NPP securing 12 seats in total across the two provinces, the Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) returned 8 seats including one bonus seat along with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Samagi Jana Balawegaya receiving two seats each.
Following are the MPs who have been elected to the Tenth Parliament from electorates across North and Eastern provinces based on the preferential vote results:

1.Sivagnanam Shritharan (ITAK): 32,833 votes
2.Ilankumaran Karunanathan (NPP): 32,102 votes
3.Ramanathan Arcuna (Ind. 17): 20,487 votes
4.Dr. Sribavanadarajah Shanmuganathan (NPP): 20,430 votes
5.Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam (AITC): 15,135 votes
