The National Peoples’ Power (NPP) won three seats in the Jaffna electoral district pushing Tamil nationalist parties to second. Both Ilankai Thamil Arasku Katchchi (ITAK) and All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) secured one seat each along with an Independent group of -17 headed by Dr R. Archuna.
This is the first time in the recent history of the country’s Parliament elections that a Southern-based political party gained the majority in the North.
