Myliddy families wait decades for return of their lands from military

Representatives of Myliddy Rural Development Society met with Northern Governor N. Vedanayahan on Wednesday.

Residents of Myliddy, Kankesanthurai (KKS) urged government authorities to release the remaining military-held lands in Palaly, Thellipalai and KKS without any further delay for resettlement even after three decades since they were displaced from their ancestral lands.

Representatives of Myliddy Rural Development Society met with Northern Governor N. Vedanayahan on Wednesday and requested him to ensure the remaining land release in the Grama Sevaka (GS) divisions of J/246 and J/251.

They also pointed out that the whole GS division J/248 is still under military custody and the residents have been languishing in temporary camps and rented home for decades.

At least 550 fisherfolk families from these three divisions are waiting for their lands to be released from military custody in order to resettle on their lands, the representatives told the Governor.

At least 3000 acres of land still under military custody in Palaly and Thellipalai region alone under military custody since 1983. (Northeastern Monitor/ January 31/2025)
