North & East mark Sri Lanka's 77th Independence Day as Black Day

Tamil-speaking people in North and Eastern provinces marked Sri Lanka's 77th Independence Day as 'Black Day' with protests demanding relief for longstanding ethnic conflict in the country even after fifteen years passed since the war came to an end in 2009. 



Students from the University of Jaffna and Eastern University in Batticaloa, religious leaders, politicians, war-affected people and representatives of civil society outfits took in the protest across the two provinces. 



Students at the University of Jaffna hoisted the black flag after removing the national flag from the univeristy premises. Students staged a protest march from the entrance of the university shouting slogans such as: "Place war criminals before ICC, where are those who surrendered to the military?, Where is the solution for ethnic conflict?" etc


A similar protest was staged by the Peoples' movement in Nallur. 


Meanwhile, relatives of enforced disappeared people along with locals staged a protest in Kilinochchi demanding the government provide answers on the whereabouts of their missing loved ones. 


Jaffna district ITAK MP S. Shritharan and TNPF MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam also took part in the protest march from Kilinochchi Kandaswamy temple to the District Secretariat. 



Similar protests were also staged in Senkaladi, Batticalao, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Ampara and Mullaithivu s well. (Northeastern Monitor/February/2025)
