Wartime broadcaster Sivasubramaniyam Ghnakaran known as Saththiya
                      

Renowned wartime broadcaster Sivasubramaniyam Ghnakaran popularly known as Saththiya passed away on Monday (14) due to sudden illness in Kilinochchi.


As a news reader, announcer and producer of several radio programmes at then ‘Puligalin Kural’ radio service in Vanni, he was a household name in the region for his unique style of presenting people focused programmes since 1990s. 


Seen with his signature shoulder bag which consist of voice recorder and equipments, he travelled every nook and corner of the Vanni region  to produce ‘Oor Suttum Olivangi’ (Travelling mic) amidst wartime situation to tell the grassroot level stories of common folks of all walks of lives. 


He also collaborated with Nitharsanam organization to produce radio based programmes. Later, he also produced ‘Mann muttram ( Sand courtyard) focusing on regional agriculture practices of Vanni educating farmers on latest techniques and weather forecasts. 


Since 2003, he retired from his long-standing broadcasting career and served as an English teacher at a local school. He passed way on Monday due to cardiac arrest while receiving treatment following an accident. (Northeastern Monitor/July 19/2025)
