At least 108 couples from Jaffna got married today at a mass wedding ceremony organized by a Singapore-based couple at Selvasannithy temple, Thondamanaru, Jaffna. The whole expenses, including for Thali, the traditional bridal gold pendant gifted by the husband, were also covered.
Singapore-based couple, Mr and Mrs T.T. Sumathy Thurai, organized the whole wedding ceremony for 108 couples who were selected from fifteen Divisional Secretariats in Jaffna. The couples were selected based on their financial background, considering the current economic crisis the country is going through.
Relatives of both brides and grooms also took part in the collective traditional wedding ceremony with Hindu rituals held at the temple, known for its simplicity and the Bhakti movement of Lord Murugan in the North.
Every year, hundreds of couples get married at the iconic temple located along the Thondamanaru tank, Point Pedro. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 28/2025)
