Marking International Day of Enforced Disappeared Persons which falls on August 30, relatives of enforced disappeared persons staged a protest in Jaffna yesterday demanding answers on the whereabouts of their loved ones through an impartial international investigation mechanism.
Families from five districts in the province gathered at Sangilian park and commenced a protest March towards Chemmani mass grave site where they reiterated their demand for truth and justice about what happened to their loved ones who were made to disappear and were handed over to military forces during final phases of war.
At Chemmani, representatives of North Eastern Federation of relatives of Enforced Disappeared Persons alleged government is not genuine on finding the truth and ensure justice served on the mass grave site pointing out pending investigations with regard to similar mass grave sites in Sathosa, Mannar and Kokkuthoduvai in Mullaitivu.
In East, along with relatives of enforced disappeared persons, civil societies, youth groups took part in the protest march to Gandhi park. (Northeastern Monitor/August 31/2025)
