Excavation launched in suspected illegal burial site in Thambuvil cemetery

 

Excavation activities were launched at the suspected illegal burial site in Thambiluvil cemetery. 


Police teams launched an excavation process at Thambuluvil cemetery in Akkaraipattru yesterday (31) following claims by one of the close aids of former Eastern Chief Minister S. Chandrakantha alias Pillayaan. 


The process was launched under judicial observation of Akkarapiattru Magistrate Court after one of the aides of Iniyaparathay, confidant of former Chief Minister reportedly told authorities that victims of enforced disappeared persons were buried in the cemetery. 



On July 28, senior official of Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) K. Pushpakumar alias Iniyabharathy and his aide Saseenthran Thavaseelan were taken into custody by CID team that is investigating enforced disappearance cases of extra Vice Chancellor of Eastern University S. Raveendranath, eighteen year old youth of Partheepan and journalist Prageeth Ekneliyagoda. 


The arrest was carried over the death of ex Chairman of Thirukovil Pradeshiya Sabha S. Thirukkumar. Based on investigations, another aide of Iniyabharathy named Sababathy was also taken into custody later. 


Based on the investigations, another four individuals were taken into custody as well. CID teams were deployed to identify the suspected illegal burial sites and no suspicious objects or human remains were found. (Northeastern Monitor/August 1/2025)
