Five army soldiers were taken into custody by Oddusuddan police, Mullaitivu over the death of a youth who was found in Muththaiyankaddu tank yesterday, police said.
The soldiers were arrested following a protest by nearby villagers who alleged that five youths were assaulted by army personnel. The surviving youths claimed that they were asked to come to the camp to collect scrap material as the camp is to be shifted to a new place but later were attacked by the soldiers.
The victim is identified as E. Kapilraj, a father of an infant. Tense situation prevailed in Jeevanagar village following the incident where locals alleged that the youth was assaulted by soldiers.
Oddusuddan police is conducting further investigations.
