ITAK calls for hartal on Friday against ongoing militarization in N&E

Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) called for a hartal campaign to be marked  on Friday (15) against ongoing militarization moves in North and Eastern provinces.

Issuing a statement, Secretary of ITAK M. A. Sumanthiran said the party urged people in the two provinces to mark the day to condemn the continued presence and military involvement in civilian affairs.

The move for hartal campaign comes in the wake of a recent incident last week where a Tamil youth was found dead after entering a military camp in Mullaitivu where he was invited by soldiers to collect scrap material

Last Thursday, five youths entered the army camp in Muththaiyankaddu, Mullaithivu after they were invited by military soldiers to collect scrap materials.  However, four youths who escaped from the attack said they were assaulted by soldiers once they entered the camp and they had to escape for their lives.

Mullaithivu magistrate ordered police to send samples of the victim named E. Kapilraj (34) to the Government Analyst department for further investigations. More police personnel were deployed at  Jeevanagar village where the youths are from to ensure normalcy. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 11/2025)
