Protest in Point Pedro demanding to release military occupied lands in city

 



A protest is scheduled to be held on Monday (August 25) in Point Pedro, Jaffna demanding government to release military occupied lands in the region. 


Chair of Point Pedro Urban Council Douglas Paul said military occupied lands including official residence of Point Pedro Magistrate, residence of District Judge, building complex belong to Postal department, Rest House belong to Urban Council and private lands are still under military custody near harbor area for decades. 


The Chair pointed continued occupying of these lands continuously blocked the development of Point Pedro city for decades, even after end of the war in 2009.


The identity of the Point Pedro Barbour- the Light house is also still under the custody of Navy posing difficulties for fisheries jetty development and fisherfolk community as whole. 


Due to the lack of space iwithin the city area since the land belong to Point Pedro Courts remained under military custody for decades, the courts complex is scheduled to be shifted to a different place, the Chair alleged. 


The Chair urged locals, fisherfolk community and civil society organizations to join hands against military occupation of land belong to departments and development of the city. (Northeastern Monitor/ August 23/2025)
