A protest was staged near Parliament roundabout in Colombo today demanding government authorities to stop ongoing harassment and intimidation of Tamil journalists reporting from North and Eastern provinces.

Condemning the recent incident where photojournalist K. Kumanan was summoned by the Counter Terrorism Investigation Department (CTID) in Mullaithivu over investigations into his journalistic work; both Young Journalists Association and Federation of Media Employees Trade Unions organized the event.

Journalists, civil society representatives, and unionists were the protesters demanding the government to stop harassing journalists in the former war torn regions.

Kumanan appeared before CTID on August 17 and later allowed to leave after nearly seven hours of questioning by authorities on his journalistic work, financial transactions and affiliations with political parties. (Pixs Tharushi Weerasinghe)
