Locals in Point Pedro, Jaffna, staged a protest today demanding the government release military-occupied lands in the region, alleging continuous occupation of land belonging to public institutions prevented city development.
Earlier, Chair of Point Pedro Urban Council Douglas Paul alleged military-occupied lands, including official residence of the Point Pedro Magistrate, the residence of the District Judge, a building complex belonging to the Postal department, the Rest House belonging to the Urban Council, and private land, are still under military custody near harbor area for decades.
Local villagers, youths, politicians and grassroot level civil society representatives took part in the protest march this morning.
The Chair pointed continued occupation of these lands continuously blocked the development of Point Pedro city for decades, even after the end of the war in 2009.
The identity of the Point Pedro Barbour- the lighthouse is also still under the custody of the Navy, posing difficulties for fisheries jetty development and the fisherfolk community as a whole.
