Mayilaththamadhu livestock farmers staged protest today demanding access to their traditional grasslands in the region. |
Livestock farmers of Mayilaththamadhu, Mathavanai of Batticalao staged protest today marking their continuous protest over two years (day 730) demanding government authorities to provide access to their traditional grasslands which are currently used by families from South who resettled in the nearby areas in recent years.
Marking 730th day today, a protest was staged at Siththandi protest hut where farmers are on a continuous protest. Batticalao district MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam also took part in the protest and a petition by protesters to government authorities was handed over to him as well.
The ongoing conflict with Tamil and Sinhala farmers over some 30 acres of grassland saw cattle stock belong to Tamil farmers were targeted and killed by various means in recent times. The Tamil farmers alleged that at least 36 police complaints were lodged against the damage that were caused to their livestock by Sinhalese settlers but no actions were taken so far.
Most of the farmers are depend on livestock farming as their main source of income and currently forced to look for other jobs including daily labor jobs to support their families. (Northeastern Monitor/September 15/2025)
