The government has been urged to release the remaining 190 acres of civilian owned land in Keppapulavu, Mullaithivu in order to facilitate resettlement of war affected people in the district even after sixteen years passed since the end of war in 2009.

Vanni district MP T. Raviharan took up the issue in the Parliament on Thursday (25) urging the government to look into the matter immediately while stressing that the National Peoples’ Power (NPP) government turned a blind eye to the residents’ request in the past.

The MP alleged whenever the matter was raised with visiting Ministers and Deputy Ministers to the district. “They assured that lands will be returned to the rightful owners but no steps have been taken so far in this regard,”

Over 60 families are languishing in rented homes and relatives’ homes, waiting for years to resettle on their traditional ancestral lands in Keppapulavu.

In 2019, following continuous protest by villagers for over 700 days, selected land plots belonging to the villagers were released by the Army. However, nearly half of the village including public buildings are still under military custody. (Northeastern Monitor/ September 28/ 2025)
