Civil society outfits in Mannar have called for a hartal campaign to be observed tomorrow (29) condemning Friday night attack by police personnel on protesters who have been on continuous protest against wind power projects.
Head of Mannar Citizens Committee Fr. S. Marcus urged local business, private institutions and public officers to extend support to the hartal campaign.
For 57th consecutive day, local residents are on a sit in protest demanding government to reconsider proposed 70 MW wind power projects on Mannar island considering environmental impact in the long term.
A massive protest March is also organized from Mannar bus stand towards District Secretariat where protesters will hand over petition to government officials.
On Friday (26) midnight, protesters were mercilessly attacked by riot police when they objected the entry of turbine equipments being transported to the city.
Earlier, the government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake directed Ministry of Energy to go ahead with the project following a special committee recommendation. (Northeastern Monitor/ September 28/2025)
