President Anura Kumara Dissanayake undertook an inspection visit to Katchatheevu Island on Monday during his two day official visit to Northern province.
He would be the first Head of State to visit the island since the islet was handed over to Sri Lanka as part of bilateral agreements reached between the two countries in 1974.
The visit came amidst recent claims by Tamil Nadu politicians, including actor turned politician Vijay, demanding the islet to be retrieved by India's Central government as a solution to ongoing fisheries conflict between the two countries.
Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala and Rear Admiral Buddhika Liyanagamage, Commander Northern Naval Area also joined the President on this visit.
