Take measures to reduce air pollution: CoA tells Jaffna MC

The Court of Appeal yesterday (19) ordered the Jaffna Municipal Council to take all necessary measures to reduce air pollution in the Jaffna area.

When the case filed by Dr Umasuki Nadarajah, a resident within the limits of Jaffna Municipal Council was taken up for hearing, the Court issued an order directing the MC to take all steps to ensure air quality in the region.

The petitioner alleged that air pollution is caused by locals burning garbage in their respective homes causing air quality at negative level in the region.

The order was delivered by a bench comprising Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya, President of the Court of Appeal, and Justice Priyantha Fernando. During the hearing, the Court inquired whether MC had taken any steps to ensure air quality as per the provisions of Environmental Act.

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) also instructed to extend the necessary support to ensure compliance with the order to MC as well. (Northeastern Monitor/ September 20/2025)
