Normalcy was crippled in Mannar district today, with the hartal campaign being effective, condemning the attack on peaceful protesters last Friday by the police in order to allow transportation of equipment to construct the proposed wind power project on the island.

Daily operations at local businesses, public markets, schools and banks were affected as whole locals gathered at the Mannar bus stand to stage a collective protest against the government decision to implement the project despite opposition from the public.

A massive protest march, organized by civil society outfits, fishermen federations, youth organizations and political parties, was staged from the bus stand to the District Secretariat office, where protesters handed over a petition demanding that stop ongoing implementation work of the wind power projects on the island.

On Friday (26) midnight, protesters were mercilessly attacked by riot police when they objected to the entry of turbine equipment being transported to the city.

Earlier, the government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake directed the Ministry of Energy to go ahead with the project following a special committee recommendation. (Northeastern Monitor/ September 29/2025)
