| Ariyalai villagers staged protest against proposed solid wastage processing plant in their village citing potential enviornmental impact to their farming lands. |
Residents of Ariyalai East residents staged a protest today (October 8) on A 9 road against proposed solid waste processing plant in the village saying the plant pose a threat to the nearby fertile agrarian land in the area.
The vehicle movement was briefly disrupted as protesters marched from A-9 road till Ariyalai junction demanding government representatives and local authorities to turn up to hear their concerns. Police had to intervene to request protesters to allow vehicle movement without disruption.
Chairman of Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha P. Mayuran came to the protest site and engaged in discussions with them pointing out that the construction of the plant is underway since it was proposed and approved by previous administration.
He also stressed that the decision to implement the decision to set up solid wastage plant was taken at District Development Coordination (DDC) meeting in the past and currently being implemented by Secretary to the Sabha.
Handing over the petition to the Chairman demanding to stop dumping garbage, protesters also said they will not be responsible for any incidents that would occur targeting wastage collecting vehicles coming into the village. (Northeastern Monitor/ October 8/ 2025)
