Lawyers attached to various regional Bars in Northern province staged a protest today in front of the Jaffna High Court complex boycotting today’s court proceedings against arbitrary search operations carried out by police in the office of a lawyer.

Daily court proceedings at Jaffna High Court and other regional Magistrate Courts were also affected due to the protest staged by the lawyers.

Police arrested an Attorney at Law yesterday over preparing fake land deed document and produced before Mallakam courts following complaints lodged by affected clients.

The Courts granted bail under two personal sureties worth Rs one million each and imposed foreign travel ban as well.

Lawyers who took part in the protest today stressed that they are not against steps taken by lawyers who violate rules and regulations including lawyers but pointed out that police carried out the search at the residence of the lawyer without a court order.

Meanwhile, Jaffna police is reportedly commenced investigations against half a dozen lawyers for engaging in irregularities related to notary and land registration process following complaints lodged by affected parties.

The Northeastern Monitor learns that some lawyers are planning to move courts with motion to prevent their imminent arrest in coming days as well. (Northeastern Monitor / October 7/2025)
