Residents of Kopay, Jaffna condemned the recent incident where hospital wastage (plastic) from Jaffna Teaching Hospital was dumped near agrarian lands in the area on Monday (September 29).
Staff attached to the hospital dumped the plastic materials discarded from hospital including mattresses at the open field on Kopay- Kaithady road and burned them.
When locals objected to the move, the hospital staff reportedly told them that they were dumping them based on the directives issued by the Court.
Meanwhile, hospital sources said approvals are secured by the management to discard waste materials outside of Jaffna Municipal boundaries while ensuring proper wastage process.
However, locals alleged that the place where the plastic wastage was dumped in Kopay used to be agrarian land where local farmers engage in seasonal cultivation of vegetables. (Northeastern Monitor/ October 2/22025)
