Mohamed Sabry, Coordinator of Sri Lanka Tamil Book Publishers and Sellers Association said at a press conference today (October 2) that the fair is being conducted for 27th year with the participation of some 200 publishers in which majority of them are Sinhala and English language publications. At least two prominent Tamil book publishers are provided space to set up their stalls.
‘Not event five percent of total stall allocation was provided for Tamil publishers,” Sabry said.
The annual fair, organized by Sri Lanka Boom Publishers Association commenced on September 27 and will be on till October 7. Thousands of readers across the island are visiting the fair.
Pointing out that Tamil book publishing industry is met with several challenges due to economic crisis in recent years, the organization said that there has been a good demand for Tamil to Sinhala translations among the Sinhala reading community. ‘ If there is good will and coordination among all the publishers, we could also bring Sinhala translations of Tamil books as well,”
The collective body of Tamil publishers urged organizers of the fair to take steps to allocate adequate space for Tamil book publishers considering the demand from Tamil readership. (Northeastern Monitor / October 2/2025)
